In over a decade of reading manuscripts and editing books for Quintessence, I\u2019ve never seen anything like Leandro Chambrone and Gustavo Avila Ortiz\u2019s TISSUES. And I\u2019ve seen a lot.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve worked on books where the author puts faces back together after gunshot wounds<\/a> (serious magic if you ask me); art books that teach you how to draw tooth morphology<\/a>; textbooks about microbiology<\/a>, biomechanics<\/a>, and PRF<\/a> that showcase the ingenuity of the human mind; and more esthetics books than I can count that wow you with the possibilities of modern techniques and materials coupled with true artistry.<\/p>\n

But TISSUES is something else. It blends the very best aspects of a scientific book with the practicality of a clinical manual and the beauty and elegance of art books, weaving a masterpiece for the reader to enjoy. The first chapter blows you away with stunning histologies revealing what\u2019s going on at the microscopic level when we talk about periodontal and peri-implant health and disease (Fig 1). Chapter 2 goes through all the instruments you need, and trust me, you\u2019ve never seen dental instruments look so good (Fig 2). Chapters 3 and 4 follow with everything you need to know about flaps and grafts, presented clearly and beautifully (Figs 3 to 6), and chapter 5 is nearly 300 pages of show-stopping cases that demonstrate what is possible when proper technique is executed by competent hands (Fig 7).<\/p>\n

\"\"Dr Leandro Chambrone<\/strong> received a DDS and a Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from Methodist University of S\u00e3o Paulo in Brazil. Subsequently, he earned a master’s degree and PhD degree in periodontics from the University of S\u00e3o Paulo. He serves as a faculty member in several prestigious institutions in North America, South America, and Europe. He holds positions of Associate Professor at Egas Moniz University (Portugal), Ad honorem Associate Professor at El Bosque University (Colombia), Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, and Adjunct Associate Professor at Penn School of Dental Medicine. Beyond his enthusiasm and dedication as an educator and health care provider, Dr Chambrone is also heavily involved in clinical research and evidence-based dentistry. He has authored over 150 papers, including some commissioned consensus reviews for the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology. Dr Chambrone currently serves as Section Editor of Clinical Research for The International Journal of Oral Implantolog<\/em>y and Section Editor of Periodontics for the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"Dr Gustavo Avila Ortiz<\/strong> obtained a DDS degree and completed his PhD at the University of Granada (Spain) before moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he completed an MS degree and a Certificate in Periodontics at the University of Michigan. He has over 10 years of experience as an educator and has worked to advance the profession as a member of numerous institutional committees and scientific organizations; he is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He was a faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, where he was the Phillip A. Lainson Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics. Dr Avila Ortiz serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Periodontology<\/em> and Co-Editor for Clinical Advances in Periodontics<\/em>, the official journals of the American Academy of Periodontology. He has authored more than 100 articles published in peer-reviewed journals as well as several book chapters. Aside from being regularly engaged in scholarly, administrative, and continuing education activities in different academic institutions, Dr Avila Ortiz maintains a private practice limited to periodontics and implant dentistry at Atelier Dental in Madrid, Spain.<\/p>\n
