\"\"<\/a>Endodontic specialists Bertrand Khayat, DDS, MSD, and Guillaume Jouanny, DDS, first met in the classroom while Dr Jouanny was an undergraduate student in Dr Khayat\u2019s class. What began as a mentorship forged over deep commitment to the profession soon blossomed into a decade-long collaboration between the two clinicians, surgeons, and lecturers. Recently, they have combined their knowledge into the textbook Microsurgical Endodontics<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

“This book can be used as a reference for simple as well as for more complex indications.”<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n

\u201cThis book is designed to help every practitioner, general dentist, and endodontist\u00a0to perform endodontic microsurgery,\u201d they say. \u201cEvery step is described in detail from the anesthesia to the sutures, and special emphasis has been placed on the clinical aspect of the procedure with plentiful illustrations and clinical examples. This book can be used as a reference for simple as well as for more complex indications.\u201d<\/p>\n

Microsurgical Endodontics<\/em><\/a> brings to light the use of endodontic surgery as a reliable, high-success treatment solution that, until now, has too often been overlooked. Given the breakthroughs in recent years, endodontic surgery has advanced to the point where it rivals conventional practices. In this book, endodontic surgery is finally being appreciated for its effectiveness as a treatment option, especially when conventional retreatment is not ideal.<\/p>\n

“It is now possible to perform endodontic surgeries with a success rate of more than 90%.”<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n

\u201cMicrosurgical endodontics is not an apical resection anymore,\u201d the authors explain. \u201cThe use of the operating microscope, the evolution of the ultrasonic tip, and new materials allow for a better prognosis. It is now possible to perform endodontic surgeries with a success rate of more than 90%. In the peri-implantitis era, it is obvious that mastering endodontic surgery will be a great asset to save more teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helping clinicians excel in their daily practices is a major priority for Drs Khayat and Jouanny. With the advent of recent advancements in technique, the authors recognized a need to fill.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe read all the literature that was already published on this particular topic, and our conclusion was that the clinical side was very often left out,\u201d they say. \u201cWe decided to write a book that would summarize the updated scientific evidence available and emphasize the clinical part of the procedure. We presented more than 100 cases with follow-ups as far as 12 years. Every step is precisely described, so clinicians can use the latest techniques to the benefit of their patients. We decided to show not only the classical before-and-after radiographs, but also the tips and tricks that are not usually shared in the literature.\u201d<\/p>\n

The authors cite chapter 7 as a perfect example of their manifested efforts to make critical steps easy to follow, especially the \u201ccrossed incision technique.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first part of the chapter is devoted to the anatomy,\u201d they explain. \u201cSoft tissues are clearly described with precise 3D rendering drawings and clinical pictures. The second part of the chapter addresses the technique of incision. Every step is broken down and conceptualized so readers can reproduce the\u00a0gestures easily in their offices.\u201d<\/p>\n

To reinforce the material presented, Microsurgical Endodontics<\/em><\/a> takes QR codes to the next level by incorporating the use of augmented reality, thereby providing readers with an enhanced visual experience. Readers can download an app for iOS or Android that allows them to access videos handpicked by the authors. These supplementary videos bring select images in the book to life when you simply hover a smart device over each image, and you don\u2019t even need an Internet connection.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe augmented reality feature is a new step in education,\u201d the authors say. \u201cIt is now possible to precisely visualize the gestures explained in writing. Different key movements with a blade, an elevator, or an ultrasonic tip are shown in short videos so that the reader better understands how to perform the procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Microsurgical Endodontics<\/a><\/i> incorporates the use of augmented reality through an app, so readers can access supplementary videos offline that bring select images in the book to life.<\/p><\/div>\n

The authors felt compelled to incorporate augmented reality into their book when they realized something was missing from its detailed diagrams. They call this missing element the \u201clive demonstration effect.\u201d<\/p>\n

“The augmented reality feature is a new step in education.”<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n

\u201cThe idea behind the augmented reality is to give the feeling of a live demonstration directly through your smartphone or tablet,\u201d they explain. \u201cAugmented reality is even better than a live demonstration because it is possible to visualize one particular clinical gesture, to focus on small details, and to repeat it indefinitely wherever you are, as long as you have your book with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even if you left your book at the office, if you have an Internet connection, all the videos are accessible through a website link within the app for a traditional video-viewing experience in a pinch.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that augmented reality is definitely the future of education,\u201d the authors predict. \u201cIt is already possible to virtually navigate into dental canals, to use augmented reality models for training, and to even perform surgeries in augmented reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

This enriched reading experience is just one part of the authors\u2019 vision for the book and the successes in endodontic treatment they anticipate resulting from its use.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is that every dentist understands the wide range of indication of endodontic surgery,\u201d they emphasize. \u201cWe hope that students, general dentists, and experienced specialists will find relevant information and that this book will help our colleagues take a step further in endodontics and start to include endodontic microsurgery in their daily practices.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/strong>Bertrand Khayat, DDS, MSD,<\/strong> received his DDS at the University of Paris. He obtained his Certificate in Endodontics and his MS at the University of Washington in 1988. A pioneer in the use of the microscope in endodontics, he also designed several surgical instruments including ultrasonic tips for surgical retropreparation. In addition to his extensive experience and expertise in endodontic surgery, he lectures internationally while maintaining his private practice in conventional and surgical endodontics in Paris.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Guillaume Jouanny, DDS,<\/strong> received his DDS at the University of Paris. He earned his Certificate in Endodontics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2015, where he received comprehensive training in microsurgical endodontics.
